| | The Chinese New Year starts on January 26th and is named after one of 12 animals. Last year, it was the Year of the Rat and this year it will be the Year of the Ox.
There is something oddly appropriate about both of those titles. 2008 saw plenty of rats, particularly in the banking sector, who contributed to the sadly depressing economic situation in which we find ourselves. On the other hand, the ox symbolises solidity, strength and hard work, all attributes which we will all have to demonstrate during 2009 if we are to survive.
As the dreaded recession continues and businesses seek to cut overheads while still trying to reach their customers in the most cost-effective way, I believe that more and more companies and organisations will reduce their exposure to traditional advertising and PR expenditure and will instead look to the Internet to promote their products and services.
As I see it, 2009 should be called the ‘Year of the Web’ as businesses will, I believe, increasingly look to either create a website for the very first time, totally revamp their existing site or just tweak what they already have.
In either case, they will need to talk to their chosen website designer/host as to their options and if they don’t have the capacity in-house to provide the written words needed for their website, then they definitely need to talk to a wordsmith who has the experience and expertise to craft the words that will create business via the web.
The Web is an increasingly powerful medium and more and more businesses are witnessing the benefits of having a well-designed website, properly optimised for the search engines and containing words that encourage action.
