Web vs. Print?

23/11/2009
There is no doubt that the print business has been suffering over the past few years – the number of printer closures is frightening – at the expense of the Web.

It’s not all that surprising, really. A website provides instant access to a business, it can be changed as regularly as you want, and that makes for a very cost-effective alternative.

Print a brochure and you have to be very careful that the contents are not time-sensitive or will be quickly outdated. Once you sign off and print, you are stuck with it until you use up what you have printed or else throw it out!

Contrast that with the web, where your content is always topical and can be easily updated. It’s not hard to see the attraction.

I did, however, come across one situation recently where print showed it has a value that the web cannot emulate totally satisfactorily. I produced a year-end printed review for a local sports club and part of the rationale was that the older members were not internet users and would always want a hard copy publication that they could have in their hands to read.

There was, though, another important consideration in the publication’s favour. The club’s review is a tangible record of what was achieved during 2009, it’s an impressive piece of design and layout and it can be archived easily for future reference. Storing it electronically is just not as effective and the visually it can never as dramatic as having it in your hand.

So don’t give up on print just yet – it will still be there in the future!
